OBJECTIVE To investigate the difference in pain score of patients allowed to view their flexible cystoscopy procedure compared with those who have not viewed the procedure on the video monitor. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 110 male patients undergoing diagnostic and review flexile cystoscopy by a single urologist were randomized to 2 equal groups. Group 1 included 55 patients who were allowed to view the procedure on a video monitor. Group 2 included 55 patients who were unable to view the video monitor. All procedures were accompanied by the same real-time explanation. Patients’ pain feeling were recorded on an VAS (visual analog pain scale) ranging from 0 to 10 after flexible cystoscopy. The pulse and respiratory rate were also recorded. RESULTS The postprocedure pulse rate and respiratory rate were not statistically significantly different between groups. Male patients who watched the flexible cystoscopy procedure with simultaneous explanations got lower VAS score (p<0.001). CONCLUSION Male patients who watched the flexible cystoscopy procedure with simultaneous explanations experienced less discomfort during procedure.
